NYC Drought

No not a mistake NYC issued a drought warning earlier this week: for the first time since 2002 New York City has such a water shortage that residents and businesses are being asked to respectively take fewer shorter showers and to conserve water. Reservoirs are well below normal levels and to accentuate the seriousness of the crisis the New York Fire Department has banned grilling in public parks.

EU Immigration

Two stories from the Mediterranean this week: Italy announced plans to send asylum seekers to Albania despite a legal ruling saying that migrants sent to Albania from Italy must be returned to…Italy. The Italian government plans to “bypass” that judicial decision. Elsewhere Spain announced that it plans to legalise non registered or illegal immigrants to the extent of 300,000 each year for the next 3 years in order to bolster its ageing workforce.

CV Stretch

In 2016 at one of the Conservative Party’s many leadership contests, it emerged that now Dame Andrea Leadsom had exaggerated her banking career at both Barclays where she upgraded herself to a Managing Director and at Invesco to being a Fund Manager despite not being either. We learnt then that more than 60% of people “exaggerate” or less kindly lie on their CVs. We now learn that our nearly new UK Chancellor Rachel reeves is maintaining that tradition. Her role at Halifax Bank of Scotland as an Economist turns out to have been rather in administration and her 10 years at the Bank of England turns out to have been 6. Who needs AI to write a CV tailored to the prospective role when it is made up?!

Guinness World Records

With Christmas approaching fast it is no coincidence that GWR put on a publicity stunt this week at London’s Savoy Hotel when they arranged for the world’s tallest woman, a Turkish web designer at 7ft 1 in to have afternoon tea with the world’s shortest woman an Indian actress at 2ft 1in. They and many more such as the world’s tallest man plus the woman with the longest finger nails in the world feature in this year’s 70th GWR edition. Amazon are offering the hardcover version reduced from GBP22.00 to GBP8.35 as a Black Friday deal. And yes I have just bought one.

You Light Up My Life

This day in 1979 was a big one for Debbie Boone with this number which went Platinum and contributed to her lifetime earnings of USD 10 million which all helped to bolster her legacy from her father Pat “Love Letters in the Sand” Boone.

So many nights I’d sit by my window
Waiting for someone to sing me his song
So many dreams I kept deep inside me
Alone in the dark but now you’ve come along

And you light up my life
You give me hope to carry on
You light up my days and fill my nights with song

Rollin’ at sea, adrift on the water
Could it be finally I’m turnin’ for home?
Finally a chance to say, “Hey, I love you”
Never again to be all alone

‘Cause you light up my life
You give me hope to carry on
You light up my days and fill my nights with song

‘Cause you, you light up my life
You give me hope to carry on
You light up my days and fill my nights with song

It can’t be wrong
When it feels so right
‘Cause you
You light up my life

Have a Great Weekend!
