It’s that time of year again when everyone is contemplating their holiday destinations for the new year, with travel agents advertising blue waters and sandy beaches across all media. It definitely looks tempting, especially with us currently experiencing lows of –4°C in London.
My mind immediately wandered to the sunny Maldives, which I visited a few years ago around this time, with +30°C weather every day, turquoise clear water, and white sandy beaches. The perfect tropical holiday destination. There was never a dull day, from surfing to diving around the coral reefs.
Plenty of wildlife with it being home to five of the worlds marine turtle species, 1,190 coral islands and the sand dunes that look like a mirage. From the moment you land at the airport almost directly onto the water, it feels like a completely different world, with the sea right on your doorstep from your bungalow, making every sunset and every morning view a spectacle.
It was also a bucket‑list moment to see bioluminescent fish in the sea and their glowing roe on the beach, which looked as if the stars had fallen.
A traveller’s paradise that I miss from time to time.

A few weeks ago I found myself in crew for The Head of the River Race’s one hundredth anniversary. Whilst I hadn’t really […]
