Finally, after so many years trying to plan a visit to Rome, me and my wife managed to enjoy an amazing short break together in this amazing city and luckily the weather was perfect too. It is ironic that many have heard the Italian saying of the ‘Dolce far niente’, which practically means ‘the pleasure of doing nothing’, clearly when one visits Rome the awe in seeing centuries of history with the old Roman era ruins, the Vatican City, and the many other churches and monuments at every degree the eye shifts to, is a totally jaw-dropping experience so one cannot say that the Romans were never sitting on their laurels. Quite honestly, it’s an emotional immersion in times gone by that you can just feel living through each century this ‘Eternal City’ has gone through, and the majestic buildings and landmarks are so huge that even from afar are quite easily visible, let alone standing in front of them can make you feel so helplessly irrelevant next to such majesty and clearly demonstrates the ‘beauty and greatness’ in whatever the Romans built.
Apart from a must visit to the Vatican, and if you’re lucky enough like we were to attend to the Pope’s Sunday Blessing at noon, the Colosseum together with the Palatine Hill and Forum, the Vittoriano, the Pantheon, the Fontana di Trevi and the Spanish Steps, as well as the Tiber River, Castel Santangelo and the Trastevere area can require at least 3 full days to start to appreciate the immense history behind Rome throughout the ages, there are so many other historical and renaissance landmarks that it can easily take a couple of weeks to really discover the immensity of this great city and once upon a time Great Empire. Last but not least, one cannot not mention the Roman cuisine and when paired with a rooftop dinner or even cocktail experience has its own pleasure and relevance to recharge oneself and desire to want to explore more and most definitely plan the next visit to ‘La Citta Eterna’.
For over three years now, I’ve been sitting in the sauna three or four times a week. What started as a way to unwind after training has become one of the most consistent habits in my life. There’s real substance behind why it feels so good. Regular sauna use is linked to better heart health, […]
Earlier this year we made our first family trip abroad since the birth of our son to Menorca. Having manoeuvred our way through a 2-year old’s first flight which didn’t prove to be as traumatic as it could have been, we welcomed the break of our week away. Positioned in the northern coast of Menorca, […]
A regular thing we do amongst friends in the city during the warmer summer months is to try out some of the more popular rooftop bars. This time did not disappoint with a well spent summer evening at Wagtail, perched high above the City of London it feels like stepping into a world where the […]
