For the first time this century the tube map has been redrawn with the long awaited Northern Line extension which puts new stations Battersea and Nine Elms on the network as of 0530am on Monday. In case you are confused having over enjoyed yourselves last night and spotted the redrawn tube map on your way home, some maps did have the two new stations the wrong way round and Battersea rather than Nine Elms is definitely at the end of the line. Red faces at TFL and those posters being torn down.
M&S has bitten the bullet and taken the decision to close 11 French high street stores at the end of 2021 that they have been operating in partnership with SFH. The blame is being placed by M&S on the post Brexit export processes now in place for fresh and chilled produce exported from the UK. Clothing and home products continue to be available online and a further 9 stores operated in partnership with Lagardere Travel retail in airports and rail stations will also continue. M&S shares easier at 183p.
If you are Welsh, you are in. Intriguingly Denmark, described on the BA site as “the country where fairy-tale castles and remote fishing towns are just a bike ride away” is offering entry to travellers “for double-vaccinated passengers from Wales only.” We are unsure if this says more about Welsh devolution from the rest of the UK or the Danes. But for those readers from the Country of Wales (NB Wales is not a principality but a country in its own right according to the Welsh Government) you have an advantage over the rest of the UK in being welcome to the land of Carlsberg Beer and Bang and Olufsen sound systems -plus the fairy tale castles and the remote fishing villages of course. At the prospect of hordes of Welsh visitors pouring off BA planes at Copenhagen Airport: GBP/DKK unmoved at 8.71
It was this day in 2011 that British chanteuse Adele had a Number 1 hit with Someone Like You. Rated as Adele’s 3rd finest song (so far) Adele sang it at the Brit Awards which precipitated a huge upturn in sales. Fans of Adele Laurie Blue Adkins to give Adele her full name are excitedly awaiting the release of a promised new album in advance of Christmas this year. In the meantime, here is Someone Like You:
I heard that you’re settled down
That you found a girl and you’re married now
I heard that your dreams came true
Guess she gave you things, I didn’t give to you
Old friend, why are you so shy?
Ain’t like you to hold back or hide from the light
I hate to turn up out of the blue, uninvited
But I couldn’t stay away, I couldn’t fight it
I had hoped you’d see my face
And that you’d be reminded that for me, it isn’t over
Never mind, I’ll find someone like you
I wish nothing but the best for you, too
“Don’t forget me, ” I beg
I remember you said
“Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead”
“Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead”
You know how the time flies
Only yesterday was the time of our lives
We were born and raised in a summer haze
Bound by the surprise of our glory days
I hate to turn up out of the blue, uninvited
But I couldn’t stay away, I couldn’t fight it
I had hoped you’d see my face
And that you’d be reminded that for me, it isn’t over
Have a Great Weekend!

Overrated Rates The unwinding of USD implied short term interest rates shouldn’t be underestimated. Take a brief look at changes in FX swap pricing over the past few months and you’ll see just how significant those interest rate expectations have proved to be. Particularly within GBPUSD, the difference is enormous. Post-pandemic inflationary pressures affected the […]
Fifty Up Exactly 50 years ago today I set out on my career in the City of London. Many of the men whom I worked with wore bowler hats and smoked pipes. Discount House men wore morning dress and top hats. Everyone wore two or three piece suits and black shoes. If you wore brown […]
China A snapshot of China today gives more than a strong indication of the likely effect on the rest of the world’s economies. In August, China had record breaking temperatures – the highest for 60 years which was further exacerbated by thunderstorms which affected agriculture sending vegetable prices 22% higher than 1 year before. Despite […]
