This October, we headed to the beautiful cathedral city of Ely in Cambridgeshire to visit our friends. It was the perfect excuse for a change of scenery and a chance to discover what this charming little city has to offer.
Exploring Ely
Ely might be one of England’s smallest cities, but it certainly doesn’t lack character!
With its pretty streets, independent shops and magnificent cathedral, it’s a lovely place to wander around. The impressive Ely Cathedral dominates the skyline and makes a stunning backdrop to the city. But the real highlight of our visit was spending quality time with our friends, having a good catch-up and enjoying a relaxed day together.
Autumn Food Festival Fun
As luck would have it, October is a wonderful time to visit Ely, especially with its autumn food celebrations. Ely’s Apple and Harvest Fayre, held on the 10th & 11th October, brought together local food producers, artisan makers and independent traders for a celebration of everything autumn. The event featured stalls showcasing delicious local produce, seasonal treats, handmade crafts and plenty of tempting food and drink. There were also traditional apple-themed activities, entertainment and a lovely community atmosphere. Not meaning to brag but I won the longest apple peel game of our group!!
Topping it all off was a trip to a lovely Pub to have an amazing Sunday roast, which was the first of the season. It’s truly completed the day. Afterwards we waddled through the streets and stumbled upon an antiques shop that was much like the Tardis, small on the outside but giant on the inside spanning 4 floors and housing 1000’s items ranging from roman coins, war memorabilia, antique furniture, various toys and other Knick knacks, some were slightly questionable in this day and age. We ended up spending a little too long in there and purchasing several items which we had to then haul to the car.
With the beautiful cathedral nearby and the historic surroundings of Ely, it was a wonderful setting for an autumn celebration. Spending time with our friends made our visit to Ely even more special. Sometimes it’s the simple things that make the best memories: good conversations, plenty of laughter, exploring somewhere new and enjoying a change from the usual routine.
It’s an Ely good city to visit.
A couple of months ago, a handful of friends and I journeyed to the South of France for a week to a beautifully isolated country house just outside the village of Coulx. We had taken the exact same trip last year and loved it so much we had to repeat it. We were leaving behind […]
At the end of the summer, I went to Corfu with my family. We were in a nice resort right on the sea. With bottomless food, drink and a sunny beach, I can’t say that I did much other than enjoy those three things. Spending my time on the beach with either a book or […]
In August, I visited Venice for the first time and discovered that there is far more to do than I ever expected. The city itself is beautiful and the winding canal pathways are a joy to simply wander and get lost in. One morning we even laced up for a sunrise run around the island […]
