Malta Blues

Meg Bonello

Waaaay back in April this year I managed to visit Malta, a country that is near and dear to my heart. If you didn’t know, my surname (Bonello) is considered the ‘Smith’ of Malta – a very common name – and whilst I wasn’t born in Malta, my Nanu (Granddad) and my Mum lived there for a portion of her life meaning my childhood was surrounded by some of the Maltese culture. On arrival my immediate need was to buy something I’ve waited over 5 years for: a cold can of my favourite soft drink Kinnie and a big pack of Twistees. Oh my, were they worth the wait and only now could the holiday start and I could go about exploring and relaxing!

During my time in Malta I kept coming back to Valetta, definitely my favourite place and a top holiday recommendation to people when asked. With the gorgeous seas all around and the streets so beautiful at day or night, the history of Valletta and the countless restaurants serving meals like lamb, ravioli and pastizz really brought back the nostalgia of my childhood! I also managed to have a much needed catch up with Sandro from the (SGM) Malta office and benefited from the loads of recommendations he provided: what a tour guide! Thanks Sandro. On the last day we were also lucky enough to experience the firework show hosted on the barges in the Marina – the absolutely perfect way to end the trip! All in all, Malta was a special holiday made up of an amazing time, good food, great people and fabulous fun.
